Sin City Review

See this if you've taken your medicine and you're not confused.
There are movies that are terrible adaptations of comic books and there are movies that are great adaptations of comic books. Then again there are also movies that are "based on a true story", meaning the story is a load horse puckey and the lead character's name shares three consonants with some actual person, and there are documentaries about ants in the African rainforest. Not having read Frank Miller's comics, I can't tell you with any authority which one of those this movie falls under. I can, however, tell you that Sin City is one fantastic movie for you to take the kids to. By 'the kids' I naturally mean your adult male gore, nudity and violence loving friends. Sin City is a neat mesh of several stories that are loosely interconnected and share their foundation in that they all take place in Basin City. Basin City is a dark and forbidding place where it's always night and at any given moment someone is having the bejesus shot/stabbed/kicked/clawed out of them. The main story themes revolve around Marv (Mickey Rourke), Detective Hartigan (Bruce Willis) and Dwight (Clive Owen).Marv is a hardcore street thug who seeks revenge for the killing of Goldie (Jaime King), a beautiful woman who mysteriously gets down with him one evening and then gets taken down that same evening. His rampage leads him to encounter evil Harry Potter look-alike Kevin (Elijah Wood) and his man-eating wolf, and ultimately with the help of his lesbian parole officer Lucille (Carla Gugino), the corrupt and powerful Cardinal Rourk (Rutger Hauer).Hartigan's problem is being one of the only honest cops in Basin City. Shot nearly to death in the course of saving 11 year old Nancy Callahan (Makenzie Vega), he winds up in prison for putting a hurt on Rourk, Jr. (Nick Stahl), son of Senator Rourk (Powers Boothe) who is the brother of Cardinal Rourk. After sacrificing his reputation to get out, Hartigan seeks out Nancy, now 19 years old (Jessica Alba), who wrote him ceaselessly for all the years he spent in prison then suddenly stopped. Who's the mysterious stinky yellow bastard following him around? Don't ask me, watch the damn movie. Dwight is a convicted murderer who escaped and had his appearance changed. After a dispute leading to the death of Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) over a barmaid (Brittany Murphy), Dwight gets caught up in a conflict between the mafia, led by Manute (Michael Clark Duncan) and the hookers of Old Town, led by Gail (Rosario Dawson). Mafia versus hookers? Do I need to give you any more encouragement to see this movie? Gather up 'the kids', go have a nice dinner (by which I mean a few beers), and go see this gory, fun-filled, violent, offensive, rude flick (by which I mean... Sin City).
